Slap!

On a goofy lunch break recently, I went shopping with my co-workers. Near our office, there's a fancy drug store which has a lot of nice stuff. It's great for browsing, but kind of out of reach for regular shopping. The good news is that they also have some good clearance. That's where I dug this up!

It's too bad you can't see it in person. Because this is pretty darn cool, the picture doesn't do it justice. This is a watch that is a SLAP BRACELET! AHHHHHH!!!

It's a rubberized texture, I don't love wearing watches anyways, and it's not exactly professional attire. There are lots of reasons I considered not buying this little gem. Then there was the big reason. I didn't think it would work. I know its hard to tell, but there aren't any buttons anywhere on the face. There was a display of watches, and none of them were ticking. I have to admit, it raised the question in my mind as to whether this shop was trying to ditch them because they were broken.

I decided to go for it anyways (see: goofy lunch described above). After all, it was $2.36! And then I got it back to my desk and started looking at it more carefully. The entire face and mechanism unit can be removed from the rubbery bracelet coating. And then you'll see this:
It's not nearly this big in real life - it's the little plastic guard that keeps the button from being pushed in and making the mechanism go. As soon as I pulled it off, the little watch started ticking away!

Ta - da! My new super cheap, keeps-good-time, unprofessional looking, child-of-the-early-90s- watch!

Summer Ends in Gold

Summer Ends in Gold

Summer Ends in Gold by marvelousminnie featuring stud earrings

I recently stopped by 21 for Love to see what was new. I've already spent much time on this blog describing my love for their stylish looks at cheap prices. I would say that the one thing I have in common with Carrie Bradshaw is that we both wear "ghetto" gold - meaning, we think of ourselves as "silver" girls, though we wear gold from time to time to mix it up or be silly. There was gold as far as the eye could see in the shop, with a few sprinkles of silver, and everything I bought was gold. Whoa! This inspired me to put together the set above. The necklace and earrings I bought are similar to those above, and I'm imagining myself wearing them with outfits like the ones I've put together here. Summer's going out in GOLD!

The Gold Coast

Okay guys, I seriously considered titling this post "Don't Try This At Home!" I have recently survived a sewing adventure. It worked out okay for me, but I wouldn't consider this post an endorsement, as I think I'm merely lucky that I didn't injure myself (other than the occasional needle stick) or ruin my project.

So, a while ago, I dropped by the Gap Outlet and discovered this tote bag.
It was pretty much love at first sight. I was especially excited about the classic lines with the fanciful sequins. But, I had a little trouble deciding whether to buy it. The bag has a beautiful lining.
And, as you might be able to see from this photo, the bag gaps open big time. While I like the lining, I was worried my stuff was going to fall out. So, I decided to buy the bag and told myself that I would have to sew on a snap. I was a woman on a mission!

I was imagining one of those magnetic snaps that are oh-so-handy on purses these days. Only a small amount of internet research revealed that it would only be possible to use a snap like that if you were intending to make a lined bag and could add the snap before sewing the lining and the exterior together. This meant that a standard magnetic snap wasn't an option for this project.

I also considered using regular snaps, which would have a decent option. However, I have one other bag that features non-magnetic snaps and I find that I never use them. I never want to spend the energy pushing them closed, and while I know this might be the epitome of laziness, I've given in.

So, I investigated at JoAnn and discovered it was possible to buy a sew-in magnetic snap. YES! Even though it was like $6, which seems expensive for a snap, I got my little coupon and picked on up. I had this seriously misguided idea that it might be possible to sew it into the lining without detaching the lining from the exterior. Why did I think I could do this? I was clueless, I guess. Seriously, if you can make it work, let me know how! I was basically prepared to give up, until I realized that, because I had chosen matching thread, I could just sew right through both layers of fabric.

I pinned the snap on with straight pins. I used two at a time. Normally, you'd try to pass one pin through all the layers and then come back up to secure things and avoid getting stuck. That wasn't an option here because it was so thick. The vinyl of the snap was pretty serious action. I went to JoAnn the day before and selected some Coats and Clark heavy duty thread in a color called Dogwood, which is a perfect match for my bag. In fact, I think one important lesson I learned in doing this project is that a good color match is the most important thing. I decided to do a back stitch.  Above is the "wrong side" on that stitch.

And here is the right side! Look at that color match! It was 75% dumb luck, 25% that I brought the bag with me to JoAnn (because I was carrying it as a purse that day), so I had the chance to compare as many colors as I wanted. While it wound up a little like an eye exam (choice A, or choice B? A or B?, and so on), I got it done.
The biggest challenge in sewing this project was getting the needle through so many layers of fabric at the same time. It was extra difficult to get the eye through, and I found myself using a lot of pressure, with left me with a sore thumb and forefinger. I was reflecting on this when I thought of the idea of using pliers. It really helped! I think the fact that you have to use pliers is a sign of just how much of a bad idea this was. I mean, seriously! I could easily have broken the needle, which wouldn't have been a huge deal but it might have gone flying and hit me or gotten stuck somewhere. Yeesh. I really lucked out.
This is the finished product. You can see the place where the snap is sewn and if you look VERY carefully you can see the imperfections in the stitching. But, I think it worked out pretty well.
And with this parting shot, the Gold Coast bag and I are ready to hit the town!

Dusk 'til Dawn

I know I've posted on this blog before about my love of Marc Ecko's Red handbags. I really like the fabric, which is faux leather with a very soft texture that isn't at all sticky. I first experienced this awesomeness with this bag:
This is a the teal Nip Tucked hobo. I bought it in 2009 and have carried it faithfully during the colder months since then. It's super comfortable to have on your shoulder while you're shopping. The fabric makes it heavy enough it's not always threatening to fall off - which I have found to be the thing that separates expensive bags from cheaper ones. (The one strap design also helps in this regard.) As you might guess, the time has come to replace this bag.

Here's a close up of the problem:
I know this bag is pretty casual, and for me, that's perfect. But I think this tassel has sort of crossed the line from casual to messy, which is a problem.

So, imagine my delighted surprise when I ran across this gem at TJ Maxx last week!
Meet the Dusk til Dawn hobo! Here's a slightly closer view:
I'm very excited about it. I was getting nervous that I wouldn't find anything to replace the sad Nip Tucked by the time next fall rolled around. I was so happy with that bag, I knew I wanted to replace it with something very similar.

I was even more excited when I discovered the standard little surprise in the zippered interior pocket!
It's the tiniest little envelope you ever did see, containing this note!
Enjoy? I think I will!

Happy Father's Day

Happy Father's Day

Happy Father's Day by marvelousminnie featuring platform shoes

I suppose I could tell you that Father's Day with my family last weekend was like this polyvore set. It wasn't! I love Polyvore and pretending to be fancy, but it is merely pretending, especially when my family is involved. We did have  great day, though, and I wanted to share a few details with you.

My dad decided that he wanted a couple of books for Father's Day, and the only other thing he said we could get him was a fishing vest, which he wanted to use to store little parts and other stuff while doing projects at work and at home. My dad has probably not been fishing more than once or twice in my entire life, so I was definitely not excited when I discovered that the new trend in fishing vests is to make them also life jackets. Yikes. So, by the time Father's Day morning rolled around, I had one book to give as a gift. I called my mom to find out what she wanted to do because I was pretty bummed out. I know there are families out there where one gift is the custom. My family isn't one of them, and it felt especially bad because I had a list and tried hard to find the things on it but failed.

So, Mom decided on Sunday morning that we'd better have brunch (in addition to the planned special dinner) to try to make the day a little better. I offered to bring fruit salad, and then as soon as Mom and I hung up the phone, I scooted over to the grocery store and picked up the ingredients.

. Apples and bananas...
 with Mandarin oranges...
 and STRAWBERRIES!

While I was at the grocery store, I also picked up one more surprise for Dad:
And with the fruit salad made and the presents all wrapped up, it was time to go and enjoy the day!

Mom made brunch, we went to see Rock of Ages, and then took Dad to his favorite burger joint (Fuddruckers) for dinner. It was a great day!

Turquoise Flip Flops

I saw these adorable flip flops at Target. Though you probably can't tell from the picture, these sandals are for kids. Uh oh! Looks like I won't be able to get these for myself anytime soon. I do dream of turquoise flip flops!

White Watches

White Sport Watches

White Sport Watches by marvelousminnie featuring adidas watches

So, as I'm sure you can tell from the set above, if you didn't already know, white watches are in! I've been looking for a watch with a white plastic bank for a while, but I haven't had a lot of luck. I'm always worried, especially with a rubbery-textured plastic stap, that it will be too tight, make the skin sweat under it, and become really uncomfortable.

I was at Kohl's over the weekend, where I found a winner!
While I wasn't initially imagining colored numbers on the face, I love this turquoise color. I considered the one with hot pink numbers instead, but I think this was the right choice!

I'm excited to be joining the party!

Hats, Hats, Hats

In Minnesota, when people talk about hats, they usually mean "of the winter variety." Hats that are meant to protect your head and ears from the cold, the snow and the driving wind. But, with a mild winter that is very much behind us, apparently it's now Spring hat season! I know in other parts of the country, women wear hats to dressy events, like Easter brunch, other church services, or derby parties. I'm sure there are some women in Minnesota who do this too, but they're seriously underrepresented. Those dressy hats are marketed alongside sun hats, which are important for Minnesota girls who are headed to the beach or out into the garden!

Recently, I found myself with friends hat shopping in two different stores on two consecutive days. Here are some of the highlights!
Here's a cute straw cowboy hat. This hat wouldn't do a very effective job of keeping the sun off your face, given the open mesh weave, but it would be a great accessory for a country music festival!
I think this one would be good for a derby party, or some other outdoorsy event where you need a hat to jazz up the outfit!
This hat would be perfect for gardening. It actually reminds me of the gardening hat worn by everyone's favorite children's book character, Linnea! I think this would also be good for the beach, especially if you had a black swimsuit.
Here's another one that's definitely ready for the beach. I like the pink and I think it would warm up the skin tone of the wearer!
This one is also perfect for the beach. This photo doesn't really do the hat justice - we're looking at it upside down and from the back. Ginny actually selected this one for her upcoming trip to the beach in California and I think it will be perfect!
I also like this one for the beach. While the big leather strap might have to go, the golden flecks in the weave make this one a little more special than just a plain straw hat!
I also spotted these, which are definitely meant for dressy wear. They were NOT very flattering on me, though Daisy was with me and they worked better on her!
These ones were definitely shiny! Never having seen any of the women in my family wear a hat to dress up, it's a little hard to take these seriously!

There was also one dressy hat I found that I really liked. Though I've never even considered wearing a hat like this, it was pretty much love at first sight!
I'll have to keep this mind just in case I get invited to the next Royal Wedding or something equally fancy!

Oscar Follow-Up

So yesterday, I revealed my picks for Best Supporting Actress, Best Actress, and Best Picture. As I'm sure you're now aware, I was dead wrong! Oh well. I had hoped to have a chance to see the movie "The Artist" at some point - I have never actually seen a silent film before. I think I'll really need to make the effort! And while I haven't seen the Iron Lady, if Meryl Streep really hasn't won an Oscar since Jonah Hill was born (in 1983), then it's definitely her turn. She has been truly excellent in so many films. I was also thrilled for Octavia Spencer, who was my close second in the Best Supporting Actress category. She was just wonderful in "The Help" and I'm happy that film was recognized in some way. Octavia Spencer is also my winner for best dressed. She looked lovely!

Polyvore!

Untitled #1

Well, here it is: my very first attempt at Polyvore!
This is what I imagine Jackie O. wearing if she were
to hit some of the quaint shopping areas around Minneapolis!
